When two people need the family car at once, buying another vehicle can seem like the obvious answer. One partner may need it for work while the other has school runs or visits across Kent. But if those clashes happen only occasionally, it is worth comparing a hire car vs a second car. Hiring can cost less when the extra vehicle would spend most days parked; regular, unpredictable use may make ownership more practical.

The cost of car ownership in the UK in 2026
The purchase price is only the beginning. Even a lightly used second car needs insurance, tax, maintenance and somewhere to park. Consider this illustrative annual budget for a car over three years old, registered after April 2017:
- Insurance: £566, the UK average premium paid in April to June 2026, not a personal quote.
- Vehicle tax: £200 at the standard annual rate, although some vehicles differ.
- MOT: Up to £54.85.
- Bromley South residents’ parking permit, if needed and eligible: £80.
- Servicing and repair allowance: £400 (example assumption).
- Depreciation, or loss in resale value: £600 (example assumption).
That totals £1,900.85 a year, before fuel, finance interest, breakdown cover or unexpected repairs. The £400 and £600 are assumptions; replace every line with your own figures. Buying also ties up money until you sell it.
Is car hire cheaper than owning a second car?
Yes, for occasional planned use rather than daily access. Our Vauxhall Viva rate is £120 for a Friday-to-Monday weekend, subject to availability and confirmation. Six such weekends would cost £720 in base hire charges; twelve would cost £1,440, compared with the illustrative £1,900.85 ownership budget above.
Our hire rates include VAT, comprehensive insurance and RAC assistance. However, allow for fuel, any optional extras and possible excess or damage charges. Check the current holding deposit and the published 100-mile daily allowance too. A deposit affects how much money you need available, but should not automatically be counted as a hire expense.
A second car costs money while it sits on the drive. A hire car costs money for the days you actually book it. Compare those two patterns, not just the purchase price and daily rate.
Hire car vs second car in the UK: Count the days, not just the miles
Looking back three months, how often did both drivers need separate vehicles? Put future commitments in a calendar, then compare the cost of hiring for those dates against a full year’s ownership.
If you need a second vehicle on most weekdays, ownership may be more convenient and economical. If the clashes are mostly holidays, family visits or occasional weekend work, hire lets you choose a car for each trip. Availability and collection arrangements still matter, particularly for unexpected journeys.
A practical second-car alternative for Bromley households
Local parking can change the calculation. Bromley Council currently lists annual residential permits at £80 in Bromley South and £150 in Beckenham, where eligible. Driveway parking may avoid that cost.
We are a family-run hire business based at 27 Hayes Lane, Bromley, serving local drivers since 1976. Our cars fleet includes both manual and automatic cars. Collection is from our Bromley depot, so factor in getting there and back when weighing convenience against ownership.
Which arrangement makes sense for your family?
Choose based on usage, not a headline saving. Frequent school runs or uncertain work shifts favour having a second car ready. Predictable weekend trips make hiring worth pricing up. Track actual demand before committing to a purchase.
Make the choice around your actual journeys
For occasional use in Bromley and Kent, hiring may avoid much of the standing cost of another car. When two drivers need independent daily transport, ownership brings immediate access. Use real insurance quotes, local parking costs and your diary to judge the difference.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to hire a car every weekend?
Not necessarily. Multiply the quoted weekend rate by how often you will hire, then compare it with annual ownership costs, including depreciation and maintenance.
Does hire include insurance?
Our advertised rates include comprehensive insurance, subject to an excess and exclusions. Check the current terms before booking.
Do I still pay for petrol when hiring?
Yes. Allow for the fuel policy and your journey mileage, just as you would with an owned car.
Can I hire instead of buying a seven-seater?
Yes, subject to availability. Hiring a larger vehicle for particular trips can avoid owning one year-round when you rarely need the extra seats.
What do I need to hire from Lanes?
Drivers must be at least 25, with three years’ UK driving experience. Confirm the current licence, identification, address and booking-document requirements with us.
