Does an Intensive Driving Course Include the Test? How Booking Works Under the 2026 DVSA Rules

If you’re considering an intensive driving course, it’s important to know what your booking covers. At Lanes School of Driving, your course includes driving tuition, but you must book and pay for your practical driving test separately through the official DVSA website.

Since 12 May 2026, only the learner taking a car practical test can book, change, swap or cancel their appointment. Driving instructors and schools can provide advice, but they cannot manage test bookings on a learner’s behalf.

You may see intensive courses advertised as including a test, so check exactly what’s covered before committing. Our Guaranteed Test Pass Scheme offers additional tuition to eligible learners who need a retest, but the test appointment and fee remain your responsibility.

If you are planning a crash course driving test in London, understanding the booking process before committing to training will help you coordinate your course and test date.

The three DVSA driving test booking changes in 2026

  1. You can make only two changes to your booking

Since 31 March 2026, learners have been limited to two changes to an existing car practical test booking. These include changing the date or time, changing the test centre or swapping appointments with another learner. Changing the date and centre together counts as one change.

What this means for your course: choose a realistic test date that allows enough time to complete your training. If your course dates change, your test appointment will not automatically move with them. After using both permitted changes, you must cancel and book a new test if you need another appointment.

  1. Only the learner can book and manage the test

Since 12 May 2026, learners have been responsible for booking, changing, swapping and cancelling their own car practical tests. Instructors and third-party services cannot carry out these actions on their behalf.

What this means for your course: discuss your readiness and your instructor’s availability before booking. You can enter your instructor’s reference number when making the booking to help ensure they are available for your test.

Use the official GOV.UK driving test booking service to arrange your appointment.

  1. Test centre changes are restricted

Since 9 June 2026, learners have been able to move an existing test only to one of the three nearest test centres to the centre where it is booked, or back to the original centre on that booking. You can also retain your existing appointment without changing the centre.

What this means for your course: choose a test centre you can reach and where you can arrange suitable tuition. If you are looking for a fast-track driving test in London, do not assume you can move your appointment to any centre if your plans change.

How to book a driving test for an intensive course

Follow these four steps to coordinate your test and training.

  1. Pass your theory test. You must pass the theory test before booking your car practical test.
  2. Discuss your driving experience. Speak to a course adviser about your current ability and training needs. Lanes recommends at least 10 lessons before starting a course if you have no previous driving experience.
  3. Book and pay for your practical test. Use the official DVSA booking service and select a suitable date and test centre. Check your instructor’s availability before confirming the appointment.
  4. Book your intensive course. Once your test is confirmed, arrange your training to finish on the day of your afternoon appointment. Explore Lanes’ intensive driving courses before confirming your dates.

Why must the test be booked for the afternoon?

At Lanes, we require learners taking an intensive course to book an afternoon practical test. This allows the instructor to complete the final day’s tuition before the examination.

This is a Lanes-specific requirement, rather than a general DVSA rule. You’ll also need to book and pay for the test separately. Completing your course doesn’t automatically mean you’re ready for the test, so your instructor will assess your driving and take you for the test only when you’ve reached the required standard.

What happens if you fail your test?

If you fail your practical test, you must book another appointment and pay the applicable DVSA retest fee. Under the current rules, you must wait at least 10 working days before taking another car practical test. This is a minimum waiting period, not a guarantee of an available appointment.

Our Guaranteed Test Pass Scheme provides additional tuition if you don’t pass your test at the end of your course. We’ll arrange a one-day course for the day of your retest at no extra tuition cost, provided you meet the scheme’s eligibility requirements. You’ll still need to book and pay for the retest yourself.

The scheme can provide up to three additional days of training, with the course completed within 12 months of the original booking date. Retests must be booked for the afternoon. Check the intensive course terms and conditions for the applicable requirements.

What if you need to move your course?

Changing your course dates does not automatically change your DVSA appointment. Before rescheduling, check the school’s terms and consider whether your test still fits the revised training schedule. Remember that you can make only two changes to your existing test booking.

If you need further changes after using both, you must cancel and book a new test. The DVSA provides a full refund if you cancel at least 10 full working days before the test date. Monday to Saturday count as working days, excluding public holidays.

This cancellation deadline is separate from the 10-working-day waiting period after failing a test: one concerns refunds, while the other determines when you can retake the practical test.

Plan your course around your test

So, do intensive driving courses include the test? At Lanes, the tuition and practical test booking are separate. You must pass your theory test, book and pay for your practical test yourself, and arrange your course around an afternoon appointment.

The 2026 DVSA rules make it important to choose a realistic test date and suitable test centre while avoiding unnecessary changes. If you need a retest, allow at least 10 working days and coordinate any additional tuition around the new appointment.

Before booking, explore our intensive crash course options and review the relevant terms and conditions. Careful planning will help you coordinate your training and test without relying on the school to secure an appointment for you.
